Nestlé South Africa would like to advise of the retail withdrawal of NESQUIK Strawberry arising out of the addition of erythrosine (E127) as a colorant in the product which, although permitted in certain foodstuffs (sugar confectionery, cocktail cherries and meat marking) is not allowed in mixes for flavoured milk products.
The inclusion of this colourant poses no food safety risk to the consumer. Please note that this withdrawal applies to NESQUIK Strawberry only in all its sizes and formats. All other NESQUIK flavours are not affected.
As a pre-emptive measure, pending the availability of the reformulated NESQUIK Strawberry, Nestlé South Africa in consultation with the South African Department of Health has decided to withdraw all stock of NESQUIK Strawberry up to retail level.
The withdrawal is going according to plan and stocks are being returned to their DCs for destruction.
In the meantime, the development of a natural substitute for E127 is proceeding well. Stocks are expected to return to shelves by October 2008.
