This weekend I was really impressed by how our community came together to assist those who were affected by the flash flood on Friday afternoon. On Friday we had 30 minutes of intense rain and exceptionally strong winds that caused a lot of damage in the upper highway area of KZN. Big, strong trees were ripped out of the ground, walls and fences were knocked down, and there was a large number of houses with roof damage. The most damage was found to be in Molweni where the strong winds ripped the rooves off many of the RDP houses and unfortunately 8 people died. Only a kilometre away from where I live you can see a path of destruction which looks as though a tornado whipped through, yet the houses in our block were completely untouched. In Pinetown there were hail stones as big as golf balls as well as flooding. On Friday afternoon the affected roads were cleared quickly and the electricity was back on 2 hours later. On Saturday morning there was a hive of activity at the shops where locals were buying blankets and food for those people who were left without homes after the storm. I received numerous sms's and emails on collection points for donations and how one could help out. It was incredible to see that the whole community was involved in assisting those in need and it was not just left up to the emergency services. You never know what life is going to dish out to you and it gives one hope to know that you live in a supportive community. On a lighter note, the festive season is approaching fast and there are some great shows to be staged from the end of November and through the school holidays. Be sure to keep checking our events calendar for what's in store. All the best to those children currently writing exams. Melanie Hartgill has kindly written an article on Learning Styles and Exam Techniques. Cara |
