Dear Moms, Dads, Relatives, Educators and Business Owners! One week left of school and everyday this week I have received a note in the kids' books for something to remember to take to school, or an event happening at school, or a birthday invitation or two or three! Plus we have to remember to organise presents for the teachers, make sure all accounts are settled, uniforms and labels for next year plus there is booking for holiday school and activities. Anyone else struggling to come up for air? This is a very sentimental time of the year for many parents. Some children are starting "big school" next year, some are just moving on to another school and for some little ones it is the last year of being at home with mom or dad as day care or preschool is on the cards for next year. It is important to keep alive the memories of the year that has gone. Scrapbook them, document them in a journal or file away your child's artwork and school homework books to look back on. Before you know it your child will have grown up and not want to acknowledge your existence. My daughter starts "big school" next year, so she has only 1 week of pre-school to go. I have been thinking how precious the Preschool years are and what they are about. Pre-school is about hand and feet prints on a card for mum and dad, about bringing home the bean wrapped in cotton wool in the purity lid, about nursery rhymes and scribbled pictures you have no clue what they are, but there are whole stories behind them. There are the drawings of people that look like jellyfish, artwork made up of sticky clumps of something stuck on paper, toilet rolls made into binoculars or windmills, paper plates made into clocks and sun faces and egg boxes metamorphosed into worms or cameras. There is no end to a child's creativity. My children are both very creative and love to do artwork. For me it is very difficult to choose which artwork to keep and which to throw away. The importance of the artwork does not lie in how it looks, but rather the fun and memories of the actual creation. My daughter can tell me how old she was and with which teacher she made each piece of art. There is a story and a cherished memory behind each item. At the end of each year we take all her artwork out the cupboard (along with a dozen fish moths, sawdust, glitter and lentils) and she happily remembers her previous years at pre-school, her teachers and her friends through her pieces of art. Be careful what you throw away. It may not be just a scribble on a piece of paper, or a sticky lumpy thing, but a story or a memory of your child's life. I hope you keep your sanity in the last week of the term and please have a look at our Christmas Feature for events, entertainment and activities for your children and the whole family in the December holidays. Take care |
