Dear Moms, Dads, Relatives, Educators and Business Owners! I try very hard to feed my kids the right food, live green, make sure they don't watch too much television, ensure they get sufficient exercise and quality time with mum and dad. My sister thinks I try too hard but I have always been a perfectionist and it is in my genes to try my utmost to get everything right. However, last weekend I fell off the holistic parenting wagon. In my endeavour to encourage and support my daughter's love of acting and singing, I made a bit of a parenting blunder. I decided to start a new tradition and make Saturday night "classic movie night" for the family. I made popcorn and hired the movie Annie. I last watched the movie when I was a kid. I just love the whole rags to riches story and the fact that orphan Annie makes Daddy Warbucks realise money is nothing without someone you love to share it with. I love feel good stories and I distinctly remember lots of fun singing and dancing to inspire any would be actress. I knew my daughter would love it. I definitely did not remember that Carol Burnett, acting as Miss Hannigan, prances around in her lacy underwear throwing herself at men and practically begging them to love her for her body. My husband and I decided not to make a big thing of these scenes as we did not want to take the kids' focus off the sweet singing kids. We winced quietly on the couch in every "drunken slapper" scene, hoping the kids would not ask questions. I was quite impressed how well Carol Burnett danced without spilling her alcohol though! I have no idea if we dealt with this in the correct manner. Perhaps we should have taken this opportunity to talk to the kids about alcoholism and boy/girl relationships. (They are too young to talk about sex). What I am sure of is that there will be many more parenting blunders to come, especially when it comes to talking to our children about sex when they are older. I personally do not have a clue when or where to start and I am wishing really hard that they will stop growing up. Where's Peter Pan when you need him! I did find Melanie Hartgill's guidelines on Talking About Sex With Your Children very helpful though. Of course my children loved the movie and keep asking me to hire it again for them. I keep saying no and they want to know why not? Well, that is the end of my new "classic movie night" tradition. I would love to hear about your parenting blunders. We wish you a happy and safe Easter holiday this weekend. Take care |
