Dear Moms, Dads, Relatives, Educators and Business Owners!
When my daughter was a baby she was scared of stuffed animals that talked, lit up or danced. She was most scared of her cousin's dancing Barney that danced and sang the hokey pokey and would scream with absolute fear if she saw it. After seeing designer Matt Kirkland's photographs of the inside of some stuffed toys (see Kids Campus chuckle below), I realised that she must have known that inside Barney lurked a Darth Vader prototype. (Picturing Darth Vader doing the hokey pokey certainly scares me!)
My daughter was given a plush halloween pumpkin toy, which if you touched it, gave a rather evil sounding chuckle and then bounced and wiggled around the place. She was horrified. So was I. I am sure I used to hear it giggling and chuckling away at night. I am starting to wonder if this could be the reason why she wouldn't sleep in her own room until she was 3. Then again she was also scared of any person who wore a hat. Thankfully none of the above seem to bother her now, although she hates to eat pumpkin.
What about these Squash-plush toys? Toys that look like road kill and are packaged nicely with toe tag and body bag. Yikes! What kind of role play is that? "Here you go son, you can pretend you ran over a rabbit on your bike".
It's no wonder there have been quite a few horror movies made with scary toy scenes in them. Have you ever had a toy that made you feel uneasy or emotionally scarred? if you still have it, send us a picture.
