Dear Moms, Dads, Relatives, Educators and Business Owners!

My kids seem to have really good imaginations. You can give them pieces of wood in various shapes and sizes, egg cartons and even toilet rolls and they will make up their own game and create some unique characters. They can make up a game with just about anything.

However, getting anything done in the adult world with a touch of speed is a huge challenge. An example is getting my son in and out of the car. He can stretch this into a half hour activity. If I need to get something done and he his hanging around my knees, I tell him to get in the car and he will be out of my hair for at least 40 minutes!

I try to encourage their imaginations as much as possible which means getting quite creative when you need to get something done on time! I don't want them to lose their creativity. I want them to hang on to their own creations for as long as possible and not to have to rely on others to be entertained.

Anyway, the point I would like to make is as follows. (Yes, there is actually a point to make here.) Take some time out from all the wonderful activities, places to visit and shows on offer during the school holidays and spend a couple of days at home (or on your holiday) with the kids playing with something simple from the garden or the trash. Encourage them to let their imaginations run wild, record it on video or on camera and in a journal. The next day you can have fun creating a book with them from the stories and characters they made up.

Here are some ideas you can give them:

If you are on the beach pretend you are stranded on a desert island and hide from the parents. Look for things on the beach to use as binoculars and swords. Make up some fun names for the pirates.

If you are at home, make a tent in the lounge with blankets and furniture and pretend you are camping in a game reserve. You can have fun together making different animal sounds and describing what they look like. Watch out the monkeys don't steal your picnic basket!

If you are in the garden then what about looking for bugs and noo noos! Make a house for them with sand and leaves in a plastic container and make your own bug zoo. Or pretend you have travelled back in a time machine to the ice age and hunt for dinosaurs!

Dads, we wish you a wonderful Father's Day on the 17th June. Make sure you spend at least an hour with your kids playing rough and tumble! This has got to be the most popular dad and child game ever!

I hope you all spend some of the holidays away from our adult world with its time constraints and digital entertainment and more time exploring an imaginary one. If you do, please email me the story and pictures and I will post them on the site.
