It seems strange that with all the advanced technologies available in South Africa, a simple, but highly successful Club Foot management technique that has made a difference to the lives of many babies overseas took 50 years to reach South Africa. The Ponseti technique ensures that the babies not only have normal looking feet but can walk with normal function for all practical purposes.
Until 2 years ago there were no doctors practising this method and currently there are only 3 nationwide who are. Karen Moss, whose son was also born with Club Feet, founded Steps Charity in order to create the awareness of the Ponseti technique and has just hosted the first Ponseti Seminar in South Africa where visiting international paediatric orthopaedic surgeons will be working together with local Ponseti doctors to train and inform the South African medical profession on the Ponseti method for clubfoot management.
The subject of Club Foot is close to my heart as my son Carrick was born with bilateral Club Feet. Fortunately, we were put in touch with Karen Moss and I remember her telling me when my son was only 1 week old that it was not necessary for him to undergo 3 hours of corrective surgery on each foot. I was horrified that this might have been the alternative if I had not been informed of the Ponseti technique. It makes you wonder what other medical practices we are missing out on! We should not have to settle for a single medical opinion and we do have the right to seek several opinions before making an informed decision. Karen refused to put her son through 6 hours of surgery and she did a lot of research before she came up with an acceptable alternative. This brings me to this month's article by Melanie. She has written an exceptional article on the options when dealing with AD/HD. She clearly points out that every child is different and what works for one child does not necessarily work for another. I have used an excerpt from her article as this months Top Tip.
Whilst you are reading this months newsletter I will be on my way to Cape Town to visit the Baba Indaba this weekend (28 to 30 July) at the Cape Convention Centre. The Baba Indaba is South Africa’s premier baby and parenting exhibition. This exhibition brings together manufacturers, suppliers and retailers of baby care products together with parents and pregnant moms. Twice daily the real Takalani-Sesame characters will be on stage with their shows to entertain the kids. For more information click here.
