Dear Moms, Dads, Relatives, Educators and Business Owners!
I overheard my son, Carrick telling my daughter, Kayla that his hero, Spiderman is so cool because he can spray webs and that Barbie is just so uncool because she has no super powers.
"Actually," I said, "Barbie has incredible super powers. She can get millions of parents to part with lots of money every year. I could do with some super powers like that." I then told them that their dad was my super hero because he is a kind, family man who....blah blah blah. This is all the kids heard as they looked at me with crinkled brows, as though I was conversing in an unknown language, right before they slipped out of the room to escape my holistic parenting skills.
My son has never watched a Spiderman movie or seen a Power Ranger episode, but he knows exactly what they are and what they do. I thought I was being a good parent by not exposing him to super hero type movies which I feel are too violent for a 4 year old to watch. However, after watching Melanie Hartgill's interview on television about children and superheroes I realised that I also need to be a realistic parent. Rather than letting my son hear about super heroes from other 4 year olds at his school and hearing their point of view, I should discuss the various super heroes with him and let him know what values they represent that are important to our family and those that are unacceptable. I would even consider letting him sit through one episode with me where I could point out these values and also discuss what is realistic and what isn't.
