Dear Moms, Dads, Relatives, Educators and Business Owners!
Once again I find my family learning basic life lessons from our pet rat. My daughter's rat Tru started walking around in circles 3 weeks ago. I suspected she may have had a stroke as she did not seem to be in any pain, and merely made her way from A to B in lots of concentric circles with her head cocked to one side. Then 10 days ago she was panting and squeaking loudly through the night. My daughter had to sleep in our room as Tru was keeping her awake. In the morning I rushed her down to the vet who advised she had an ear infection. The vet wanted to treat her and keep her overnight. They asked for payment upfront of course - R350. Ouch! That's quite a price to pay for a rat. However, the alternative was to have her put down and go home with an empty cage and tell my daughter that her beloved "child" Tru has gone to live with Jesus. It was easier to part with the money.
My daughter was quite upset to hear that Tru had to stay overnight at the vet. Last year her dog Savannah died from ingesting a rare worm and I had told her that her dog was very sick and the vet could not make her better. I had to convince her that this time it was different, hoping the vet and the rat would not let me down.
5 days later, a course of antibiotics and a nice fat vet bill of R500, Tru came home. My daughter was ecstatic. There had been a lot of tears and tantrums whilst Tru was away from home. The vet had fixed her ears but she still walks around in circles with her head cocked to one side.
My daughter learnt how to cope with the stress of worrying about her sick animal and caring for her when she returned. I took the opportunity to talk about her feelings and how she should not take her unhappiness out on her brother or her parents and she needs to talk about how she feels and understand why she felt that way. We also talked about the possibility that Tru might not come home if the vet could not fix her. She was quite practical and suggested that if Tru died we should feed her to the cat!
Children can learn so much from animals big and small and I feel they should be part of every child's life, not only as a form of stress relief and a companion, but also to help mold their personalities by learning to be gentle and empathetic.
My husband also learnt some new skills - how to feed a rat antibiotics with a syringe and yoghurt!
