Dear Moms, Dads, Relatives, Educators and Business Owners

My kids just love to ask really challenging general knowledge questions, especially at a time when I am unable to look up the answers. These days they very rarely ask questions I know the answers to! They never come up with these weird and wonderful questions when I have my laptop on and I can search for answers on the internet, or when I am sitting in the lounge next to the bookshelf full of encyclopedias. They almost always ask me when I am driving my car or watching a sports match or grocery shopping. Occasionally I have managed to look something up on my cell phone.

I have tried to keep a notebook in my bag or in the car to write down the questions as soon as I have the chance so that I can look up the answers for them. But like everything else in my car, they were either removed and lost forever or trashed on the floor. (In fact my car is always so messy and dirty from my kids that even my son’s friend refuses to get a lift in it!) So when I can remember the questions I look them up.

Here are some of the questions I can recall that my kids or nephews have asked:

  • Who made God?
  • How heavy is the rocket fuel that a space ship needs to get to the moon?
  • How many legs does a Shongololo have?
  • How does a belly button make fluff?
  • Why do I get black fluff balls between my toes when my takkies and socks are white?
  • How is sausage skin made?
  • How long is the sun going to burn for?
  • How long did the oldest person ever live for?
  • Which cricketer scored the most runs ever?
  • How many people have died from being bitten by the world’s most poisonous snake?
  • Who has killed more people, crocodiles or hippos and how many died?
  • If two people phone the same telephone number at the same time, who will get through first?
  • Why do you get lava and how does rock melt?

Those of you whose children are only just learning to talk, let me warn you, once they get going and they start asking, they never stop! So stock up on your general knowledge resources and tools and try and record as many of their questions as you can. You will enjoy reading through them together when they are older. Their questions will also remind you to appreciate our amazing world by seeing it from their perspective.

If you have written down or do remember some weird and wonderful questions your kids have asked, please share them with us.
