Dear Moms, Dads, Relatives, Educators and Business Owners Do you have moments when you realise your brain is not quite as sharp and quick to learn as it used to be? You start to envy your kids for their ability to think quickly, learn fast and retain the new information easily. Recently I was unable to locate my car keys whilst in a rush to get to tennis lessons on time. You know those moments when you have left just enough time to get to your appointment, provided you all get into the car immediately? Then you notice your car keys are not hanging on the key hook ready and waiting. My son reminded me they were in my husband’s car and he had gone to work. I quickly rang my husband to ask him to bring the keys home, fortunately his office is nearby. In mid-conversation my daughter says, “Mom, why don’t you use your spare keys.” Oh yes! A couple of years ago our luggage did not arrive the same time as us at our destination. At the airline's lost luggage desk I was asked to describe the suitcase. Whilst doing so, my son spoke up, “Mom, the suitcase is a dark green colour, not black.” Oh yes! As your children get older, you start to recognise situations where you actually rely on them. You realise they are not totally and completely dependant on you anymore and you are starting to depend on them for certain things. My son has the most incredible memory which I have found quite useful lately as mine deteriorates! My daughter loves to teach, organise and entertain other children. I depend on her for this when we have visitors. Over the last year I have done research on various learning styles, learning environments and personality types, for reasons outlined in my article Are your children in the right learning environment?. I have become more perceptive to each child's strengths and what motivates them. I have started to find ways for them to build on and better these strengths and contribute to the family unit at the same time. This has not only helped to build their self esteem but has also become essential in strengthening our family team....especially at times when I have those, "Oh yes!" moments. We have made a slight change to the format of our Family Entertainment newsletter, I hope you enjoy it!
