Dear Moms, Dads, Relatives, Educators and Business Owners

Well I am supposed to write something about spring and the outdoors in this issue. But I am sitting here (in Durban) wearing leggings, woolly socks, a big jersey and a blanket wrapped around me, so right now my only thoughts about Spring is that it has sprung off to a far away place. Our spring rain thus far, has consisted of a couple of sneezes, or bird spit according to a friend of mine, and with the result, the garden still resembles the Kalahari.

With no rain to wash away the nasty little bugs, they are still hanging around and causing havoc among our community. If I was a school teacher I would permanently wear one of those medical masks to protect me from the germs circulating around the classroom. I recently had man flu for a week (my poor husband) and have since kindly shared my germs with my kids who are supposed to be sick today, but have surprisingly perked up since we decided to keep them home from school.

When my kids are "house bound" they usually resort to what they love doing most, playing in the dirt in the rabbit run. See picture above. For them this is the equivalent of down time and therapy. I think it is the perfect spring activity and a nice escape from the usual hectic pace of life. Kids get to just be.

The recipe is as simple as kids are: A pile of dirt, some leaves, some stones, perhaps a seed pod or two and a favourite plastic animal to inhabit it.
