"Imagination is more important than knowledge" - Albert Einsteincoffee shop

At Smudge, imagination is king as children jump into a world of creative expression and get lost in the fantasy of their dreams… all while being guided through the wonders of art, music, fantasy and literature!

Smudge is a children’s art centre in Craighall Park, Johannesburg.  Built around a central art room, Smudge also offers an interactive music room, children’s book lounge, fantasy dress up area, tactile baby space, party room and a coffee shop.

Aimed at children from all ages, Smudge is primarily about offering children the space and opportunity to develop and express their creativity.  Art activities are not only restricted to paper - children can draw on the walls, the tables, re-arrange the felt wall and create masterpieces through art.

Smudge is a magical environment for children to explore their natural creativity.  An environment where the only thing running wild, is the children’s imagination.

art roomSmudge’s Art Room - qualified art teachers guide children through varied art and craft activities that change weekly and include drawing, sticking, painting, building, gluing, moulding, sculpting, learning, expressing and of course smiling and laughing.  Each Smudge child will leave with not only a masterpiece they created, but having had an enriching experience that leaves their imagination tingling with excitement.  As well as the craft activity on offer, children can paint, draw and indulge in beading.

  • The music room offers a dreamland of sound -  rain shakers and xylophones adorn the walls along with a massive bass drum and djembes, affording children the chance to create their own music and rhythms.  Specialised music workshops are run on a monthly basis by a qualified music therapist.
  • In the dress-up area children can create their own fantasies in a ceiling suspended tent dressing up as pirates or princesses accessorised by feather boas, hats, shoes and jewellery. Children come alive in this room, taking on different characters and role-playing.
  • Smudge’s book lounge offers a quiet space for children to pick up their favourite book and curl up and read on comfy floor cushions.   Special sessions will include book readings.
  • dressup roomSmudge’s party room is a private area to host children’s birthday parties with children choosing a theme and special art activity for their special occasion. An art teacher is brought in specially for the party guests and will guide the little artists through the activity for the party. Each birthday child is made a special birthday crown, their name is adorned on the giant blackboard and they are made to feel like a prince or princess for their special day. Children have full use of all the other facilities at Smudge during this time.
  • Toddlers and the even younger at heart can take their first steps into artistic expression in the baby area by exploring stimulation through play dough, interactive books and a felt wall.
  • And whilst all the creative fun is going on, mum, dads, grannies and nannies can relax in the coffee shop offering freshly baked cakes and light lunches as well as a little icing table for children to create their own magical cupcakes.
  • For adults, there are art classes available, catering especially for pregnant mums and mums with newborns.
