My son completely ignores anything I say to him and does not even acknowledge I have spoken. At first I was concerned he had a hearing problem. I sent him for a couple of hearing tests and was told his hearing is perfect. I have heard him pass comments from another room in the house on conversations the rest of the family have had in the lounge and you only have to crinkle a packet (potential junk food being served sound) and he will come running. He has selective hearing and chooses to only listen and respond when it suits him. Kind of like a cat. His school teacher, his swimming teacher and his horse riding teacher will agree to this fact.
I was therefore delighted to come across a new interactive story CD called Bunny Tales. Bunny Tales has been developed by a psychologist, Dr. Justin Kennedy, and a former pre-primary school teacher Colleen Foster to encourage development of cognition, thinking skills, concentration and listening skills. There are 7 stories and the idea is to let your child listen to one story per day. My son was so taken by this CD that he sat for 1 and a quarter hours listening and responding to it. At first I was totally amazed that my son had the hidden ability to listen and respond. Then I thought how cute he was answering all the questions about the stories and himself. Then, as exhausted parents do when their child is totally consumed with an activity at hand, I put my feet up and had a quick cat nap. When I woke up he was still chatting away! Sorry Colleen, I kind of bent the “presence of an adult is essential” advice!
If you need to prove to your child and yourself that he does actually have the ability to listen and respond, this is the CD for you. Also ideal to use in the car and distracts siblings from fighting with each other. Yay!
The CD was designed essentially for the 3-5 age group but children up to 7 have been thoroughly enjoying it too.
