Lula Bird is fifteen years old and in five days time she’ll be turning sixteen, but it’s a birthday she is dreading because she has never been kissed-and who ever heard of a sixteen-year-old in that situation?
It’s not through any fault of her own that Lula has never been kissed-she’s attractive; clever and witty, but she does have the rather unfortunate reputation of being slightly accident prone ( some might even say “jinxed”) and this seems to have scared off the majority of potential candidates. A crisis meeting is called and Lula’s best friends draw up a list of suitable candidates ( though in reality, not-so-suitable-especially as one of the boys is only twelve!) to remedy the situation!
Whilst Lula’s crisis gives the book a light-hearted tone, the story does carry more depth in that Lula comes from a rather scatter-brained and dysfunctional family. Her father has been behaving in a very peculiar manner lately; and the little English village that she lives in is under threat from greedy developers owing to vital documents being stolen whilst in the care of her mother. All these factors ( and the fact that she appears to have a stalker as well!) put Lula under an enormous amount of pressure to get to the bottom of the document theft while trying to hold her family together.
The author, Samantha Mackintosh, has a writing style that is trendy and witty and most teens will identify with Lula’s emotions and actions. This makes Kisses for Lula an entertaining and humorous read that will appeal greatly to the younger teen-age generation.
