Book Review
Authors: Nikki Bush and Graeme Codrington
Future-proof Your Child will open your eyes to and get you thinking about what the world will be like in 10, 15 or 20 years time when your children leave your home as young adults to make their own way.
With technology changing the face of society at a rapid pace, the future will most certainly be very different from today. There will be technology and careers that have not been invented yet. How do parents prepare their children for something that does not yet exist?
Future-proof Your Child urges parents to keep updated with the media and technology of today and encourages parents to continue to learn along with their children. The book gives readers an idea of some of the possible jobs of the future (my favourite part of the book) and some tips and ideas on how to prepare your children from as young as 12 months old, for the future.
The main messages that I came away with after reading this book are:
- Both parents and children need to embrace change and adapt accordingly.
- Give your children the tools with which they can shape their future rather than just giving them the answers.
- Form strong family bonds.
- Lead by example.
So if a cookie to you is something you eat and Twitter is what the birds do, it is time for you to close the digital divide and start learning about the internet and social media technology. You need to know where your kids are going online and what they are doing there. If you have older children, ask them to show and teach you. Embrace their world and enjoy the possibilities together.
