Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books
Author: Alyson Noel
This is the second book in “The Immortals series” written by Alyson Noel. It is aimed at the teen market is is in the same genre as the “Twilight”.
In the first book we meet Ever, a sixteen year old girl whose parents, sister Riley and dog, Buttercup, are killed in a car accident. Ever, as the lone survivor goes to stay with her aunt. There she meets Damen, a gorgeous young man, who it transpires, is immortal. In the first novel the early trials and tribulations of a new romance are explored. Along the way Ever finds out that although Damen has been immortal for hundreds of hears, she has re-incarnated many times, but has always died before they could be together. The novel ends on a happy note with Ever deciding to become immortal too, so that she and Damen may be together forever.
The second book picks up where the first leaves off, Damen and Ever are now together, Ever is immortal. Parents of younger teens may not be happy that the focus at the beginning of the book is on how they can consummate their relationship, and planning their tryst so they can finally “be together”. Ever is learning to master all her “immortal powers” and all seems set for a “happy ever after” story. Enter a new handsome young man, Roman. From the moment he arrives on the scene Ever’s life is turned upside down. Damen loses interest in her, and starts pursuing another girl at school, her friends turn against her, her life is filled with confusion. In addition Damen also seems to be becoming weak and ill, something not possible for an immortal. Ever is convinced that Roman is to blame. The plot follows many twists and turns.
This book is written in a very similar style to the first, lots of emotion and turmoil as Ever tries to deal with her situation, she faces all the typical teenage issues as well as the trials and tribulations of being immortal. It is a book that most teens will find someone they identify with, and be interested in seeing how the story ends. For parents there are no very hot and heavy scenes that need censoring, there is no foul language or other things that parents may not be happy with, but for parents of younger teens you would need to decide about the focus on their Damen and Ever’s physical relationship. Otherwise an easy read that is good for light entertainment.
