CHILDREN’S FUN ACTIVITY WORKBOOK

The children’s fun activity workbook is a fun workbook for parents to do with their 5-7year old children.  Compiled by Occupational Therapist, Almarie Jansen van Rensburg, it poses the just right challenge for children in their grade R year preparing them for grade 1.

The 160page workbook includes a gross motor program, fine motor exercises and games, eye movement exercises and worksheets stimulating visual perceptual skills.

The main aim of the book is:
Stimulating the building blocks in the pre-school years for later success – through play.

The workbook include:

A gross motor program

A gross motor program

When your child reach Grade 1, he or she will be sitting on a chair at a table for most of the day.  This requires an enormous amount of postural stability, meaning that the muscles of his/her neck, shoulders and trunk need to work very hard to keep him/her in the correct position. The gross motor exercises strengthen these specific muscles while mom or dad will have loads of fun with the kids and in the end you will be ensuring better quality of work at school.

Fine motor co-ordination games

Fine motor co-ordination games

A list of 80 games that will stimulate and strengthen your child’s fine motor abilities is included in the book. Children in Grade 1 spend about 60% of their time doing fine motor activities and their little fingers need to be prepared for this. These games include fun games that can be done in the car, bath and during individual playtime. Cutting worksheets in the book also improves abilities to cut.

Eye movements excercise

Eye movements

Most parents do not even think about eye movements and that adequate eye movements play a vital role in the progress that their child will make at school.  If you think about it, your child needs good movement of the eyes for every task expected. Therefore 10 games for stimulating eye movements are included.

Eye and Hand co-ordination
worksheets for perceptual skills

Visual perceptual skills

A number of visual perceptual skills need to be in place for your child to progress at reading, writing and math. A list of definitions of these skills are included for parents to see why they are important.  Each worksheet also indicate which skills are being addressed. Your child can work through the book and you can know that each skill will be stimulated. The worksheets are challenging, yet achievable for children aged 5-7 years.

Most of all I want parents to spend time with their kids!  We all have very busy lifestyles, but our kids thrive on quality time spent with them and in the end – they are small for such a short time!

Testimonials

We all know the consequences of an unstable spatial world, the importance of being able to re-place and re-draw patterns or shapes and for the brain to systematically organise data observed by the eyes or to remember an object as an entity. Not to mention the importance of the ability to differentiate between one object to another or to observe small differences and similarities accurately. A child who is unable to do the above, will definitely experience serious problems in the Junior Phase, for example: writing problems, particularly copying from the blackboard, etc. This fantastic workbook provides us with the necessary activities to address all visual perceptual areas in an effective and fun way. The kids in my school could not wait to "work in their big, green books"! Personally I feel, apart from all the other important areas of development one should address in the preschool child, this workbook is an essential, adequate tool in aiding the child's perceptual world.  In addition to the actual purpose of the book, I have also used the book for language development and vocabulary buidling, especially for kids with English or Afrikans as a second language!  Overall, I have experienced great results. As educators of preschool children, it is our responsibility together with the parents, to prepare the children optimally for formal schooling so that children experience Grade One as an adventure and not as a nightmare!  Needless to say, my Grade R's of 2011 will definitely also work through this book.

Thank you, Almarie  for taking the time and effort to put together such an effective educational tool at our disposal!
