The question is not whether you can afford to invest in a Montessori education for your child, it is whether you can afford not to.

The prepared environment and the role of the educator in the classroom distinguish Montessori from other educational approaches.  It is only in the Montessori classroom where independent activity makes up 80% of the work while educator directed activity is only 20%.  The special environments enable the learners to perform various tasks that induce thinking about relationships.  The logical, sequential nature of the environment provides orderly structures that guide discovery and offer practical occasions for introducing social relationships through free interaction. The Montessori Method aims to aid the child’s growth towards independence in two ways:  short term it provides freedom and independence in learning, long term it helps the child acquire tools for living, skills and abilities which give a person greater choices in life and make one free from dependence on others.

COMPARING MONTESSORI WITH TRADITIONAL EDUCATION

Montessori children are unusually adaptable. They have learned to work independently and in groups. Since they've been encouraged to make decisions from an early age, these children are problem-solvers who can make appropriate choices and manage their time well. Encouraged to exchange ideas, discuss their work freely with others, such students' good communication skills ease the way in new settings. Research has shown that the best predictor of future success is a positive sense of self-esteem. Montessori programs, based on self-directed, noncompetitive activities, help children develop strong self-images and the confidence to face challenges and change with optimism.

“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.”

  • Emphasis on cognitive structures and social development
  • Teachers role is unobtrusive, child actively participates in learning
  • Environment and method encourage internal self discipline
  • Individual and group instruction adapts to each student’s learning style
  • Mixed age grouping assists social development
  • Children encouraged to teach, collaborate and help each other
  • Child chooses own work from interests, abilities, while teacher ensures child  completes 3yr syllabus
  • Child formulates concepts from self teaching material
  • Child sets own learning pace to internalize information
  • Child spots own errors through feedback from material
  • Learning is reinforced internally through child’s own repetition of activity
  • Multi-sensory materials for physical exploration development

Vision

At the Montessori Metaphysic Centre of Light we aim to create a safe and loving space for growth and development. In line with Montessori philosophy, we envision loving and creative beings who are spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically independent and ready to consciously embrace their life’s journey. Through a Montessori and Metaphysical approach we provide children with the tools to continuously develop their skills for life long learning.

Treating all individuals with respect and integrity encouraging the understanding of the interconnectedness of life.

“My vision of the future is no longer of people taking exams and proceeding on that certification from secondary to university, but of individuals passing from one stage of independence to a higher, by means of their own activity, through their own effort of will, which constitutes the inner evolution of the individual.”     Maria Montessori, 1948

Mission

We are committed to the educational philosophies and approach originated by Dr Maria Montessori:

  • We nurture and promote a commitment to society based on democratic values, social justice and fundamental human rights.
  • Encourage a learner centered philosophy for the development of each individual.
  • Ensure each child develops to his or her full potential academically, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Our school community of mixed age groups encourages our children to work cooperatively within their fundamental three-year cycles in the service of one another, the school and society

Our Metaphysical approach combined with Montessori philosophy and methodology encourages loving guidance towards excelling to ones individual full potential.

Metaphysics is directly translated as ‘beyond the physical’; we have adopted this approach in order to cater for the child holistically.  It has been found that most Montessori environments forget about the spiritual aspect of development.  As we accept all children from all religions and race we do not enforce religion up on our children, even though we do follow Christian principles we may at times teach children about the different cultures though allow for each family to enforce their own religious beliefs from home.
Preventing conflicts is the work of politics; Establishing Peace is the work of education” Maria Montessori, 1936

Why Montessori?

The Montessori Approach is a philosophy of education with the fundamental belief that a child learns best within a social environment that supports each individual’s unique development.

It is a system based on profound respect for the child’s personality, helping him grow in all areas of his development. The Montessori Approach differs from other educational approaches because it is based on the principle of freedom within a carefully prepared environment suitable to the nature of the child. The role of the teacher is also a differing point. In the Montessori classroom the teacher is known as a “directress” – she guides, directs and observes the child and one of her main functions is to prepare the environment for the child.
The Montessori Metaphysic Centre implements Dr. Montessori’s philosophy, within the context of our modern society. The underlying philosophy at the School is “learning to love to learn” and everything that occurs within the School will be aimed at achieving this.

A child goes through sensitive periods at certain stages in his life; there is a starting point, peak and end to all the sensitive periods.  During these sensitive periods the child is able to absorb huge amounts of knowledge without fatigue. The child in a sensitive period will be attracted to and interested in work and movements of that sensitive period, he will focus and be completely absorbed in things of that particular sensitivity excluding everything else in the environment.

A sensitive period is referred to as a window opportunity, once a window opportunity of a certain sensitive period has been missed  it can never return.

What happens when we starve children of the right environment for these ‘Sensitive Periods’:

Intelligence and knowledge that the child could have easily absorbed now no longer appears to take place naturally and with ease, it now turns into a difficult task where one has to be taught.

This teaching can never compare to the absorbing during a sensitive period, the child will not gain half as much from the teaching experience as he would have from the sensitive period been met and nourished.  His work now appears tiring and tedious at times even boring as he has no urge toward it or anything that attracts his interest to the particular stimuli or work.

When sensitive periods are starved and not met there are more effects than just missed intellectual learning.  This could lead to vandalism and aggression, violent reactions which are often put down to naughtiness and temper.

Integrated Learning Therapy:

WHAT IS ILT?

If you are reading this, the chances are that you have a child who is struggling at school. Maybe he or she is finding it difficult to master skills such as reading, writing, maths or spelling. Maybe he or she can do all these things but comes home with reports about unfinished work, or work left at home.

The teacher complains about her being disorganised, untidy or even aggressive towards other children. Or maybe she is described as being unfocused and a daydreamer who never seems to listen. And maybe you agree with the teacher because you see the same behaviour at home.

What’s going on? Why did your happy toddler, who so loved to learn, who listened so eagerly to stories, who knew so much about dinosaurs and built wonderful Lego constructions suddenly become this difficult child who can’t sit still, can’t concentrate, can’t follow directions, can’t remember the spelling he seemed to know so well last night…?

The school will probably recommend an assessment to get to the bottom of the problem. Now you start the rounds of Occupational Therapists, Psychological testing, Neurologists and even Psychiatrists.

You learn about labels such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Hyperactivity, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Central Auditory Processing Problems, and so on. It is highly likely that someone will recommend a drug. But nothing seems to really help. What’s going on?

Integrated Learning Therapy (ILT) helps get to the bottom of these problems by considering the child in totality. By means of careful and thorough investigation, ILT practitioners try to unravel the underlying causes of a child’s difficulties.

We have found that there is no ‘silver bullet’ that can promise a quick cure but by tracing aspects of a child’s neurodevelopment within his or her environment, we generally are able to help overcome problems to a significant degree and to prevent problems in pre-school and primary school children.

ILT has everything to do with the brain – hence our use of the term ‘neuro’, referring to nerves that make up the brain and nervous system.
And then, as the name implies, ILT brings together knowledge and practice from related fields. The focus is on the development of our central nervous system (including the brain, the peripheral and autonomic nervous systems) so that components can support our learning and everyday functioning.

What is the aim of ILT?

ILT is committed to helping all individuals to realise their potential with efficient functioning in school and/or the workplace as well as in the wider social world.

HOW DO WE HELP?

After a careful assessment procedure (consisting of a comprehensive questionnaire, interview and a personal evaluation of the client’s neurodevelopmental status) ILT practitioners will address any suspected or confirmed underlying issues through:

  1. suggestions for lifestyle or other adjustments and
  2. a programme of movement-based activities.

The movement activities and exercises are carefully selected in order to help the child overcome neurodevelopmental irregularities.

The activities seldom take longer than 20 minutes (often not more than 10 minutes) each day.

“My children have been with the Montessori Metaphysic Centre of Light since their doors opened. My children are very comfortable, at peace and secure at the school. They love their teachers and look forward to attending their daily routine. The teachers encourage creativity, independence and individualism, thus nurturing the confidence in the children. Communication is openly encouraged and the children are treated with respect and dignity. Discipline is done with love and discernment for the children’s’ growing personality. The environment is always beautifully clean, colourful and safe. There are many extra activities offered to keep the children’s interests captive and grow their talents. The school also involves the parents as much as possible by organizing various activities and keeping them informed with regular communications. I would certainly not hesitate to recommend Montessori Metaphysic Centre of Light to any parent who is looking for a happy, healthy environment for their child to learn and grow.”

Colette Davel:
“If it hadn’t been for your team at this Montessori, raising a child alone would have been so much more difficult. He got to learn everything he needed to prepare him for primary school and rooted his perception of life in such a way that I know I will never have to worry about the future. Thank you for pushing hard, teaching with passion and putting my mind at ease.”
