physical, and intellectual needs.

and movement, creative activities, fantasy play corner, reading and mini library,
construction toys, free supervised outdoor play, educational puppet shows and
outings, baking, classical relaxing music during rest time.
Most, but not all, activities are organized around themes relevant to the children’s
lives.
Early diagnosis and intervention
Eye and hearing test.
Speech and occupational therapy services in case of a need for specific
assessments and support of a child.
Our Grade R (reception year) programme adequately prepares the children
for a much more structured formal education. Perceptual workbooks and the
Letterland (phonics) programme are an integral part of our Grade R programme. In
collaboration with the primary school community in the area, we aim to prepare our
children for the formal school environment.
Socio-emotional skills development
We constantly strive to create and maintain a child-friendly environment wherein
individual children learn to be independent, responsible, confident and feel safe and secure.
Children learn to be part of a group, to interact appropriately with their peers, to
share equipment and teachers’ attention, to express and communicate their needs
and concerns in sociably acceptable ways.
Fine Motor skills development
Children need to develop hand-dominance; a solid brush, crayon and scissors
grip and manipulation. They need to strengthen and exercise their small fingers,
hands and eye muscles through pegging, scribbling, drawing, threading, dough
manipulation in preparation for writing and tying their shoe laces at a later state.
Large Muscle skills development
Playing freely on the playground, on bikes and on various jungle gym equipment
strengthens their muscular coordination and develops running, climbing, jumping,
spatial and body awareness, balancing mid-line crossing skills.
Mental and language skills development
Class programmes include theme-based discussions, singing songs, movement
games, finger-plays and rhymes, telling and reading stories etc. to help the children
develop self-expression listening and communication skills, co-ordination, memory,
imagination and concentration skills.
Many of the children at Rainbow Kids Early Childhood Development Centre come
from homes where languages other than English are spoken. Rainbow Kids Early
Childhood Development Centre acknowledges the importance of home language
and the need for the children to develop communication and comprehension skills
in that language. Children are not discouraged from using their home languages in
their classrooms or playground with their peers and adults.
The use of English in the classrooms however, as a common language should be
seen as an educational and not a replacement language. The commitment to use
English at the same time support the children in their development of the home
languages is a significant one. However, it can place tremendous multilingual
and multicultural demands and challenges on the teachers if they do not have
adequate and proper understanding of such backgrounds. Parents are encouraged
to work together with their children and teachers in facilitating the acquisition and
development of bilingualism.
Parental involvement
The development and education of a pre-school child require partnership between
the Early Childhood Development practitioners and parents. Rainbow Kids Early
Childhood Development Centre seeks to involve parents in a variety of ways.
Progress reports (mid-year and end of the year) are provided to parents who are encouraged to discuss the assessments and written observations of the teachers.
Where a specific development challenge is identifies, the staff and the principal
will seek a meeting with the parents to understand the cause and to explore
interventions. Parents are also encouraged to attend one-on-one teacher-parent
scheduled meetings.
Social family friendly events are arranged and carried out in a way that encourages
interaction and relationship building in a multi-cultural mixed-race environment
conducive to early holistic child development and education.
